The BEST workshop was designed and founded by Andrea Dixon RN, CNM based on the award winning textbook Birth Emergency Skills Training: A Manual for Out-of-Hospital Midwives (Birth Muse Press, 2008). BEST carries the reader from the initial steps of intervention though definitive care, balancing a friendly tone and visual appeal with authoritative and clinically useful information. It is loaded with mnemonics and other memory aids, and is richly illustrated with the author’s artful drawings and photography.
What is B.E.S.T.?

Birth Emergency Skills Training is the original certification course offered to Out-of-Hospital practitioners to gain the skills needed to manage obstetrical emergencies. B.E.S.T is offered to; midwives, physicians, nurses, birth assistants and doulas.
MEAC 21 Contact hours B.E.S.T. ONLINE ONLY, HYBRID=29 Hrs. Bridge Certificate Eligible for Maternal Emergency Newborn Category 3 (2 PHARM, 1 Racial Disparity) Participants build on existing skills and gain new ones through interactive discussions, hands on simulations, and guided one on one practice with instructor and founder of the B.E.S.T course Andrea Dixon RN, CNM and Avril Bowens, RN, CPM instructor and creator of our online program. Up to date evidence-based practices and fundamental skills come together to increase competence in Out-of-Hospital settings. |
What does the training include?

Our new HYBRID course includes ONLINE learning of 21 hours and a LIVE 8 hour day, with timely breaks and lunch. The class includes didactic information, learning activities, hands on practice, and case studies, as well as trauma management and pregnancy complications scenarios.
The new program combines 21 hours of online learning with 8-hour hands-on skills practicum. CA-BRN CONTACT HOURS 29 total @ day BEST-Live and HYBRID BEST MEAC 29 CONTACT HOURS for HYBRID or 3 CEs Bridge Certificate Eligible by NARM for Maternal Emergency, Newborn, Category 3 (2 pharmacology, 1 racial disparity). NRP Certification is offered as half-day add on (with discount price for B.E.S.T.® attendees). Advantages of our new format are: • allows ample time to move through the online program in preparation for the skills practicum. Lectures therein may be repeated and paused as needed, protocols updated while actively learning, and includes printable pdfs. The focus here is to provide the necessary foundation to fully participate in the hands-on skills practicum. • allows full focus on hands-on skills with realistic, instructor facilitated skills stations. The new flow provides ample time to practice together, network, and share stories in small groups. • protects birth communities while providing the opportunity to practice essential birth emergency skills and earn CEUs. • allows for the effective training of more birth workers to recognize, respond and treat developing birth emergencies, contributing to safer out of hospital births and assisting to decrease maternal/neonatal morbidity and mortality. We travel from California to New York and set up dates regionally. You may check out our calendar online (updated regularly) to see when we will be near you and contact us to save your date! We do not book the week of holidays nor during other national midwifery conferences. You may request weekdays or weekends. We provide methodical, evidence based approach to : Overcoming disparities in midwifery practice Recognizing at-risk pregnancy Pain and bleeding in the prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period Identification of complications in pregnancy Managing complications of labor & birth Postpartum emergencies Neonatal emergencies Team creation to facilitate safe transfers |

A venue to host participants comfortably. International venues welcome!
A non-refundable deposit of $200.00 to “save the date” and advertise your workshop on our site.
A head count and $300.00 good faith payment 30 days prior to your workshop
Payment is due the day of the workshop. Invoices and certificates are issued at the completion of the course
